The process of polymer sheet extrusion is an interesting one, and gives us the ability to produce a wide range of different styles of sheeting from plastic materials. It consists in heating the polymer resin to soften it and then extruding it through a die to make a film. This sheet can then be used for a wide range of applications from packaging, to roofing, and even in the medical industry.
There are different methods employed for extruding polymer sheets, each with its own advantages and applications. The most popular method is flat die extrusion, in which polymer resin is put into a hopper and forced through a flat die into sheet form. Another is blown film extrusion, wherein the resin is melted and inflated into a tube, and pressure flattening of the inflated tube to make a sheet. Each method has its advantages and is selected based on the result desired.
When the polymer resin is heated within an extruder the process of extruding the polymer sheet begins. Then the resin is extruded through a die, and into a sheet of thin material. Thereafter, said sheet is cooled and cut into the desired length. This method requires precise control to produce a sheet with the proper thickness and a smooth finish.

There are numerous advantages to using polymer sheet extrusion. The biggest advantage is that it can print sheets in large volume at lower cost. Furthermore, the process is adaptable to produce sheets of differing thinness and measurements. Applications for polymer sheets include packaging materials and agricultural films as well as use in the automotive industry. They're durable and lightweight and can be shaped into just about any form.

Although polymer sheet extrusion is a beneficial process, it may have its own associated problems. One problem is to get a sheet which is of even thickness. Thicknesses may vary in the sheet and thus create weaker points in the sheet, which may lead to tearing or breaking. Air bubbles that may be trapped in the sheet during extrusion is another issue which has to be solved. Such bubbles can cause imperfections on the sheet and spoil the quality of a song sheet.

With the help of the new technologies, there are many developments in polymer sheet extrusion. One solution is to utilize coextrusion process in which extrusion of several layers of differently shaped materials in sandwich-like structure into sheet with specific properties. It is just that method that is more frequent used to impart barrier properties to transparent sheet for the food packaging. An additional development involves the addition of additives to the polymer resin to target improved performance, including UV stabilizers to improve the weathering of sheet.
